So I want to start by saying that I had never heard of gooey butter cake until I visited St. Louis. Apparently this is a thing? Well, I’m the adventurous type and gooey butter cake sounds delicious, so sign me up!
I asked around and got a recommendation for Gooey Louie, especially since I felt like this would have to be the one thing to bring back home ( I don’t think ribs travel too well). I got to the small store location and walked in only to be greeted by one of the friendliest men I’ve met, and that’s even by St. Louis standards.
We got to talking, discovered he was from the Central Florida area, and launched into discussion on politics, people, travel, and of course food. I have no shame in saying I brought quite a few of these cakes. I stuck to the original because as the owner pointed out, the original was the best, and if you wanted to add anything, it could be done by adding things myself.
I picked up a mini gooey butter cake for myself as well, despite being stuffed from a huge BBQ lunch. I at least made it out to the car before shamelessly stuffing my face with cake. I’m not quite sure how to describe butter cake. It’s got crispy edges and exteriors, but at the same times it doesn’t fail to be completely gooey and moist and delicious inside. It’s just a delightfully wonderful creation.
If you’re in St. Louis, do yourself a favor and get some gooey butter cake! It will be one of the best decisions you make!
